“Franny is Art You Love by Elizabeth Traub
For most of my adult life I have worked around high school kids through an organization called Young Life. It was such a delight and joy to come alongside and be a friend to the future grown ups. Parents, pray your high school kids find a grown up friend that can pour confidence and self esteem into our children. I have prayed that for all five of my kids and thankfully they have had other people besides me. There is this space and place our kids are in when learning to identify themselves apart from their parents. Having a person, their person is important.
“Franny” has many thoughts that are different than her parent’s thoughts. Her mom wanted powderpuff soft pink and blue. Franny wanted hot pink and black. Franny won. She died her hair hot pink and now wears black. It has always been a challenge when working with clients and their tweens. Tweens are evolving into their own sense of self. Self expression is important. If your child is not harming themselves allow them to practice at home making independent choices.
This piece was inspired by a young girl named Franny. Her mother hired me to design her daughter’s bedroom. All decisions were ultimately her mothers. Franny would roll her eyes as her mother suggested the colors, and the design. When her mother left the room I asked Franny what colors she would want. Franny told me, without skipping a beat, she wanted hot pink, grays and blacks. She told me those, “are the color of my mood every single day.” I never forgot those words.
Her room was decorated and designed beautifully. there were no design decisions based on what Franny wanted. When I went to drop off one final item there was Franny. Beautiful fair skin, bright green eyes and hot pink hair. She was dressed all in black. She got her way. Franny wins. Going back almost 30 years, “Franny” this is the piece I would have designed your entire room around.
This piece can be ordered in custom sizes in a beautiful Gallery Wrapped Print.
