“Polka Blacka” Dance

If I told you where this piece started and how it ended you might just laugh a little. I had all my paints and canvas on the big island in the kitchen. I started cooking dinner. I had a pasta ladle with a hole in the center. The hole is the exact size of each dot you see here. You see I took my paint brush and started using the ladle as a template. Pretty soon I turned the burners off and decided to finish this piece. It started out quite colorful as you will see in other blogs. I created a “Polka” collection and have been working on this one collection all week.

There was no one home at the time I created this piece. I could not have TV or any music on. Nothing that would distract having a steady hand. In my left hand I held the ladle. My right hand the fine paint brush. If you look closely you can see my strokes. My hands would cramp up and I would take a break. Each break allowing the next layer of color to dry.

I kept thinking I was done. Hand cramping and more polka dots added. Why would I continue? Yet something about holding the ladle steady, precision painting and remembering the exercises I once learned while attending the Art Institute of Seattle. We would come into class. In a box were all kinds of kitchen utensils, or a tool box with real fixing tools. Were were to choose one and then had less than 30 minutes to design and paint an artful piece with the inspiration of whatever tool we chose.

On this day my inspiration was a pasta stirring tool. My first order is about to be shipped off to an office building and I love it.
